A limited edition version made from a sand coloured, lightweight, ripstop, dry wax, 100% cotton from the British Millerain Ranger HX range. British Millerain are specialist in waxed cottons and are based in Rochdale, Lancashire. The dry wax fabric is waxed on both sides, is machine washable and can be reproofed.

The Odyssey XL is a lightweight bikepacking saddlebag that can be mounted on the rear or the front with suitable bag supports.  It has a massive expandable carrying capacity.  The rolltop closure, extendable flap and D rings on the lid make this a truly versatile bikepacking bag. For visibility, there are reflectors on the pockets and lid, plus LED straps allow the addition of a light. The base is reinforced with a removable corrugated board that helps prevent sagging when the bag is not full.

An integral Bagman Support pocket on the outside gives the bag extra stability when used with the Bagman Saddlebag Support (Expedition) - not included. Inside the bag is an integrated zipped pocket plus two further pockets with press stud closures. There's a convenient carrying handle plus D rings on the sides which allow you to carry the bag off the bike with a shoulder strap (not included).

The Bikepacking saddlebag comes with 3 straps to attach it to the seat post and bag loops on the saddle or bag support.

Note: In heavy/persistent rain, we advise using a protective liner inside the bag.

Carradice Bikepacking

  • Visibility - Bikepackers are often out early and back late when the light is not great.  It makes sense to maximise visibility with high-quality reflector.
  • Sustainability - We like to do our bit for the planet by making bags that can, with a little care, last a lifetime.  We have also incorporated upcycled inner tubes in the bag designs to grip and protect the frame as well as phasing out the use of leather.
  • Easy Access - A major gripe for large seatpack users, is the extra time taken to fit bags with the straps and tensioning needed.  The Odyssey works best with bag support like our Bagman Standard Saddlebag Support. It prevents sway and allows for a quick and easy demounting. It's wide opening allows for easy access to the contents but it's only as wide as the average person's hips so you don't take an aero hit when out on the trails. .
  • All the bags in our Bikepacking range are hand-crafted in our factory in Nelson, Lancashire.

Bag is great, customer service is not.

Beautiful, very well thought out and well-made bag with smart support.
However, the delivery time indicated on the website of 7 to 10 days within the eu (when shipping from France) is too long and eventually became 12 days. After 8 days, I had still not even received a track + trace; however, an email from me to Carradice about this was never responded to.

Odyssey XL Saddlebag Ranger HX

Excellent build quality. Well thought out pocket size and placement. A joy to use. Just what I’ve come to expect from Carradice products.

Great pack, although subjectively a bit smaller...

I use this saddlebag in combination with the bagman on my bike, and it’s a great pack for all kinds of use cases. With the rolltop design it also stays in shape really well when it’s not maxed out on its capacity. With its narrower and taller design compared to the camper longflap (which I have on my handlebars) it seems a bit smaller than the camper. I’m not a huge fan of filling it completely up, as I don’t like it that tall, so for me it’s more in the mid-sized section but with the option to go fully loaded. This also makes it harder to get off the bike, when swinging your leg over the saddle, as you might hang onto the bag. Most of the time I fill the bag around halfway, and then put my tent on top with the flap holding it in place. This works great. (The narrower-taller design might be a big plus when running the bag between drop bars)
But what I really like is the material! The color is great, and the material looks super rugged but lightweight. Wasn’t a big fan of the standard camouflage option. The Ranger HX Sand looks similar to some of the US-made bags by other companies, which I really liked.
But be aware that it’s not fully water-resistant when getting constantly sprayed by your rear wheel. But it’s resistant enough for 99% of use-cases. Electronics maybe into another dry-bag as a pre-caution.
And the side pockets fit 1L Nalgene bottles (when left open), which I didn’t expect. So that’s a plus as well.
Overall I’m happy with the bag, and I really like my Odyssey XL - Camper Longflap Combo on my Velo Orange Neutrino. Perfect little bikepacking rig.

The bag I’ve been waiting for (and the next bags I’m waiting for).

I’m not a lightweight cyclist. I like to pack a picnic, stove, folding chair and swimmers and head off down to the beach on a hot day, often by the road less travelled so I prefer a roomy saddlebag which stays put when I’m trundling down bumpy bridleways but - unlike most bike packing frame bags - detaches easily once I reach the beach. This bag, used with the quick release bagman expedition support does just that. Its slim profile means it doesn’t snag on bushes on narrow trails, the sleeve for the bagman means it stays put, the extendibility means I can fit everything in and it pops on and off with ease.
The lightweight cotton is really tactile, forming a satisfyingly smooth profile on the bike and the honeycomb stitching and sandy colour are just gorgeous. It’s not as robust as cotton duck but it is much lighter and being cotton, probably just as easily repairable. I haven’t tested its waterproofing because, unlike the rest of the UK we’ve had little rain down here in the South recently but I’ll just use little dry bags inside if I’m concerned.
I’ve paired it with the Cambrian as a bar bag and now I’m just waiting for some matching front panniers for the full bike packing set (Hint hint, lovely Carradice people).
