The Odyssey XL is a bikepacking saddlebag that can be mounted on the rear or the front with suitable bag supports.  It has a massive expandable carrying capacity.  The rolltop closure, extendable flap and D rings on the lid make this a truly versatile bikepacking bag. The bag is constructed from super tough 1000 denier Cordura that strikes the right balance of waterproofness, weight and wear. For visibility, there are reflectors on the pockets and lid, plus LED straps allow the addition of a light. The base is reinforced with a removable corrugated board that helps prevent sagging when the bag is not full.

An integral Bagman Support pocket on the outside gives the bag extra stability when used with the Bagman Saddlebag Support (Expedition) - not included. Inside the bag is an integrated zipped pocket plus two further pockets with press stud closures. There's a convenient carrying handle plus D rings on the sides which allow you to carry the bag off the bike with a shoulder strap (not included).

The Bikepacking saddlebag comes with 3 straps to attach it to the seat post and bag loops on the saddle or bag support.

Carradice Bikepacking

  • Visibility - Bikepackers are often out early and back late when the light is not great.  It makes sense to maximise visibility with high-quality reflector.
  • Sustainability - We like to do our bit for the planet by making bags that can, with a little care, last a lifetime.  We have also incorporated upcycled inner tubes in the bag designs to grip and protect the frame as well as phasing out the use of leather.
  • Easy Access - A major gripe for large seatpack users, is the extra time taken to fit bags with the straps and tensioning needed.  The Odyssey works best with bag support like our Bagman Standard Saddlebag Support. It prevents sway and allows for a quick and easy demounting. It's wide opening allows for easy access to the contents but it's only as wide as the average person's hips so you don't take an aero hit when out on the trails. .
  • All the bags in our Bikepacking range are hand-crafted in our factory in Nelson, Lancashire.

Very nearly perfect

I own three other Carradice saddlebags and while I love all of them they each have their quirks. I bought the Odyssey XL to take over day-to-day commuting and touring duties from a well-worn Super C. The design of the Odyssey XL makes a number of small improvements to the Super C, together they add up to make it probably the single most useful item of cycle luggage I've ever owned.

The combination of the stiffening board on the base of the bag and the properties of the fabric itself mean that the XL keeps its shape remarkably well when half- or even less full. This solves one of my main frustrations with cotton duck saddlebags. The fabric and therefore the bag is also much lighter. The side pockets are smaller than the Super C, which makes them more useful in my opinion—I ordinarily only use them for a tool bag and inner tubes, and am happy to trade here for more usable space in the main compartment. The pocket for the Bagman is another great addition and helps the back feel more secure. Lastly, the D rings for attaching a shoulder strap are positioned at the sides of the bag and not on the back, which makes it far more comfortable to wear on the shoulder—essential for a commuting bag.

In particular though it is the expandable volume and extra long flap which really makes this bag excellent. There are always times on tour or just stopping at the shops on the way home where you find yourself wishing you could somehow find a tiny bit more room in your bag.

My only criticisms are very small ones. The fabric loops for attaching the strap which loops around the Bagman and the rear light are quite thin and not very tight, and you are liable to find your light flings off if you are too vigorous opening the top flap. And the appearance is a bit underwhelming. With it's angular lid the Super C has a more interesting silhouette (and a fancier patch)—I normally prefer a black saddlebag but here I went for the camo as I thought the black looked a bit plain. Perhaps some more colour options, or a redesigned patch would help. And there is just something about cotton duck which speaks to you in a way synthetic fabric will likely never. But I really am splitting hairs here, it really is a fantastic bag.

My favorite bag from Carradice

I already own a number of saddle bags, handlebar bags, and panniers from Carradice, and like the title says, this one has become my favorite for everyday use. Besides being extremely versatile, some of the features I appreciate most are the solid bottom with rack "pocket" (I wish all Carradice bags had this feature), roll-top closure, and well-placed reflective strips.

My only criticism, and this is highly personal, is I am not crazy about the hi-vis orange under the main flap. As this is mostly hidden from view when a vehicle is approaching from behind, I'm not sure what its value is. And just enough sticks out around the edges that it lessens the otherwise nice appearance of the bag, especially when paired with certain bike colors. I will add, though, that Carradice has always been good about changing the fabric to black at no charge if you simply request it in your order notes. (Try and find another company that does that!)
