Very good panniers

An excellent design. Clips on easily but securely. Robust. I particularly like the absence of an annoying elastic downhaul . I often used to forget to attach the elastic with potentially bad consequences

So far, so really really good

I like the way it doesn't fall over when you put it down. It's a brilliant advantage. The genius of a flat bottom. I love that feature because sometimes when you're on tour for example you can't remember if there's something in there which won't like being put on its side. That alone is almost worth the extra. Secondly, so few of the panniers have outside secondary space. This has a spacious and deep side pocket. I don't want to be faffing around unclipping then unrolling the main bag just to find something that's now probably buried at the bottom. Very useful emergency side pocket to put the stuff you might need to pull out quickly en route, like a jumper or a waterproof, or your lipstick, whatever! I know you might have another pannier for that but not always. Thirdly, I love panniers with an ordinary clip down top rather than an ortleib roll top. I think ortleib are obsessed with waterproofing. You can get a lot of stuff in under the lid and fasten the lid tightly down. I've been doing this for years with my old Altura. All manufacturers seem to have been brainwashed by the ortleib way. Generally the construction seems very sturdy but not owned for much over a month but they look like they will last for ages without cracking which the ortleib ones do after a time

Go natural!

I have used Ortliebs on several long tours and they are good. However I think the Carradice bags with a slightly bigger volume and natural hand made approach gives them the upper hand environmentally. Breathable cotton duck fabric is an advantage in a wider range of environmental conditions.
