Epic High Capacity Heavy Duty Panniers

Had mine since 2012. I've used them on three big multi month MTB backcountry expedition trips. (Total approx 7 months, 7000k.) 7+ day stages, backcountry, carrying 7L of water. Sometimes carrying up to 10kg each side over rough mountainous dirt roads and 4WD tracks, some very big long hard descents. Plus a handful of MTB bikepacking weekends, and lots of shopping trips since going carless in 2019.

Love the volume, for loading heavy on the rear to allow MTB agility without loaded front forks.

Common Aussie insulated supermarket shopping bags fit in them perfectly.

I always carried spare plastic mount brackets on tour, but never broke one.

The outside pocket's zips both failed early on, but I just cut drain holes in the bottom and used small carabiners to close them, with waterproof contents, like my Nalgene bottle, and they remain functional like that after 6000k of MTB touring.

Otherwise, they survived the hard-core use extremely well. Towards the end of the last three month expedition in 2021 they began to wear through on the inside bottom corners. They've passed their 'best before' date in the last year. The old style strap guides are coming off. But they're still usable and mostly rainproof.

I check occasionally to see that they're still on the market, because they have a permanent place on my wishlist because I don't have an extra pair stashed away for safe keeping, like I wish.

I can't believe they're only AUD$156.10 for a pair in 2024! Awesome! But the AUD$157.76 shipping cost is even more unbelievably awesome.

But I'd still pay $314 for a new pair, if I had it.

Thankfully I don't NEED a new pair yet because my current ones are doing regular fully loaded trips to the drink container recycling centre for cash. Hard-core overuse?

Check Google Maps for Killiekrankie Mountain, New South Wales. It's next to New England National Park (2021.) The other photo is a timer selfie from 2012, above the Awatere Valley, NZ.

Edit: Locally, you can get a Topeak Drybag. Same volume (24L) with a drybag style closure, and no tie down straps, only an additional shoulder strap. It weighs 170g less than the CarraDry per side (784 vs 950). On sale one side is $154 ($170 RRP). So CarraDry is definitely my pick. I always use the top straps, and the pockets are very handy (especially with intact zips.) The brackets are tested to be bombproof. And I like the grey colour.

Great Panniers. Good price.

I had a Carradice saddlebag more than 50 years ago so was confident these panniers would be excellent quality. They are very impressive with clever and sturdy fitting kits. They are much better in that respect to my husband's Ortlieb panniers and are of a more thoughtful design. I have a matching pair of front panniers.

These are fantastic, totally waterproof and big enough for all your kit. Been using mine for two years and never let me down.
